The crowd lines the taproom bar and tables, and the glasses start filling – it’s another day at Brown’s Brewing Company. But becoming the first craft brewpub and a landmark of the Capital Region was no small feat.
Garry Brown, a photo journalist turned craft beer brewing entrepreneur, and his wife, Kelly, a flight attendant turned craft beer marketer and PR expert, founded Brown’s Brewing Company in February of 1993. With no prior knowledge of craft brewing, Garry’s 1980’s West Coast brewpub and craft brewery influence inspired him to bring the world of craft brewing to the Capital Region.
Brown’s has grown a loyal clientele across the region and today they brew over 100 different styles of ales and lagers annually and serve ten or more beers on tap at any given time. Over the last 25 years, they have received a number of awards, including a Gold Medal in the prestigious World Beer Cup Gold and Silver Awards for their Oatmeal Stout and Whiskey Porter, as well as TAP New York’s Vassar Cup for the Best Brewery in the Hudson Valley.
Garry and Kelly take pride in owning a local brewery, and when it comes to their financial needs, they choose Pioneer Bank. “We’re pitching local, so why shouldn’t we bank local too?” To launch the state-of-the-art canning line at The Walloomsac Brewery, Garry wanted to work with commercial bankers who could understand the business and support his plan. Today, Garry and Kelly have grown to 150 employees and have opened the Troy Taproom and Brewery, Revolution Hall, and The Malt Room, in Troy, N.Y., and The Walloomsac Taproom and Brewery in North Hoosick, N.Y. The Walloomsac Brewery is the center of Brown’s brewing operations and will eventually brew up to 20,000 barrels of beer a year.
